The Brassia orchid hybrids
(click photo to enlarge) are perfect for the more experienced and discriminate orchid collector. They have been called the "Spider Orchids" ever since their discovery due to the shape of their flowers. These exotic beauties have long, slender light yellow/green sepals and petals that stretch out like spider's legs.
Brassias are members of the oncidinae family, and are fairly easy to grow and bloom. Each approximately 18" plant will arrive while still in bud, and about 5 flowers will open all at once, and last for about 2-3 weeks in good conditions.
We send either the Brassia Rex 'Sakata' or "Lilian Oka", whichever is blooming at the time of order. The plants may vary slightly from the photo above.
When not in bloom, most do well in full sun. Optimum temperatures are 65 to 75
degrees (18C-21C) during the day and 55 to 60 degrees (13C-16C) at night. Offer them plenty of humidity (50% to 70%) during their active growth period, when they
are growing new pseudobulbs and starting to produce their new flower spikes. Keep the plant moist but not wet, and dont let them dry out during their growing season
They love good air circulation and can grow to be quite large. After the Brassia's pseudobulbs quit growing, let the plant "rest" for about 2 weeks by reducing the frequency of watering. During this time dont fertilize, and lower the day and night temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees if possible.
